Parliament - 1. The legislative branch of Government, composed of the Sovereign (represented by the Governor General), the Senate and the House of Commons. Some legislation may be initiated by the Senate or by private Members, but financial legislation may be introduced only by Ministers of the Crown in the House of Commons. 2. The period under which the Parliament of Canada exercises its powers. Pursuant to the Constitution Act, a Parliament cannot exist for more than five years.
